Biography

Dr. Jan Cooper is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA.  She received her BA from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA in 1977, where she majored in Social Anthropology.  She matriculated to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, where she received her MD in 1982.  She then completed a residency program in Internal Medicine in 1985, and a fellowship in Endocrinology in 1987, both at Tulane University School of Medicine.  After one year in private practice in New Orleans East practicing Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine, Dr. Cooper returned to Tulane and joined the faculty in 1988 in the Section of General Internal Medicine within the Department of Medicine.  She has maintained a busy internal medicine practice while staying involved in the clinical education of medical students and residents.  From 2002 – 2005, she was the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs for the School of Medicine and the Faculty Advisor for the Student National Medical Association.  Dr. Cooper’s main clinical focus is the prevention of cardiovascular disease, particularly in minority populations, by lifestyle modification, early detection and tight control of risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and obesity.
