Remarkable Woman: Setting her sights on creating a better New Orleans

Dr. Rebecca Metzinger was a finalist in the WGNO Remarkable Women Award contest. She goes by so many names. Just to name a few, she goes by mom, wife, friend, advocate, and around certain parts of town, doctor. “I can’t tell you how many times people have cried when they have come to me because they couldn’t see and they were able to give them vision back,” shared Dr. Rebecca Metzinger.  Click to read about Dr. Metzinger's inspiration and tremendous work.


 

Dr. Metzinger joined the Department of Ophthalmology at Tulane School of Medicine in July 2008. She is chief of ophthalmology at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System. She served as team ophthalmologist for the New Orleans Hornets during the 2004-05 season. Dr. Metzinger received her BS in biomedical sciences in 1992 and her medical degree in 1995 through the integrated pre-medical/medical Inteflex Program at the University of Michigan. She completed an internship in general surgery in 1996 at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, MD. She also completed a post-doctoral research fellowship, a three-year residency in ophthalmology, and a fellowship in cornea and external eye diseases at Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Metzinger’s research interests include prevention of corneal transplant rejection, facial nerve regeneration, and immunosuppressants.
