Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences ~ Internal Medicine & Psychiatry Residency

Welcome to Tulane Med/Psych!

Thank you for your interest in our Combined Internal Medicine & Psychiatry residency training program. As you explore your options in combined training, you are wise to check out Tulane, as we are constantly progressing towards our goal of innovations in integrated care. This is a field that we are passionate about and desire to grow; we are excited that you are interested in learning more and hopefully joining us!

The program is a five-year residency leading to board eligibility in both disciplines. It affords us the unique ability to care for the whole person, body and mind. The five years are split half and half between Medicine and Psychiatry. Upon graduation, our resident alumni are thoroughly prepared for careers in Medicine and Psychiatry. Our graduates have chosen a wide variety of jobs including those that involve combined inpatient medicine and psychiatry hospitalist, consult/liaison services, psychotherapy, primary care Med/Psych, and a host of academic duties. Several graduates have also elected to continue training in medicine or psychiatric fellowship programs.

The shifting landscape of the health care system in New Orleans has afforded us the opportunity to redesign systems of integrated care to be more patient-centered, community-based, and focused on quality and access. In addition to rotations in both departments, Med/Psych residents maintain two combined clinics nested within both the academic and the community-based primary care clinics. The new University Medical Center opened August 2015 where we have one combined Med/Psych clinic. We also house a Med/Psych clinic at Ruth Fertel, a community federally-qualified health center. Our new VA hospital opened in 2017 and we anticipate further integrated care growth there. The wide variety of practice settings allows for plentiful opportunities to practice our skills and experience different models of care!

Founded in 1993, Tulane was one of the first combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry programs in the country, and we take very seriously our role in the integrated care movement locally, regionally and nationally. We welcome and encourage our residents to participate in national advocacy efforts. Our residents have a balanced curriculum that prepares them for careers at the forefront of that movement. We expect our residents to be leaders, educators, scholars, advocates, and clinicians from day one and grow in all those areas.

At Tulane, we are fortunate to enjoy mutual support for the program from both the Department of Medicine and from the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology. We believe this is important for a combined residency to thrive. We also believe that there must be regular opportunity to integrate the two fields, rather than have just a collection of blocks on each specialty. Tulane's Med/Psych program offers numerous opportunities; we invite you to peruse our website to learn more about them and the field.

We seek self-starters who are committed to combined training and have a clear vision of what opportunities their specialized training will provide them. If you are selected for an interview, you will get the chance to take a closer look at our unique program, both in the relaxed setting of our half-day-in-the-life experience on day one and the more formal full day of interviews on day two. Another major reason you should come and see for yourself what's going on at Tulane is the city of New Orleans, which is unlike no other--make time for a proper visit!

We look forward to sharing our program with you on your visit, then welcoming you to our field on match day no matter where you choose to train.
