Family medicine is the medical specialty which provides continuing, comprehensive health care for the individual and family. It is a specialty in breadth that integrates the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences. The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system and every disease entity.

Family medicine doctors provide the majority of "primary care" for society. A primary care physician is a generalist who is the first contact physician and takes continuing responsibility for providing the patient's care.

Family medicine physicians provide the following services:

  • Annual physicals
  • Preventive care
  • Well woman/pap smear exams
  • Well child/School physicals
  • Newborn vaccines
  • Acute care, coughs, colds, skin infections, joint injuries
  • Chronic disease management, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis
  • General psychiatric care, depression, anxiety,insomnia
