Our population is aging!
This presents new challenges, but it also brings tremendous opportunities. The goal of the Tulane Center for Aging is to assure the quality of life in an aging population. Achieving this goal has multiple facets that reflect the many dimensions of aging. These dimensions include the physical and cognitive health of the individual, as well as the relationship of the individual with society. The latter is not only a matter of attitudes. It strongly depends on the structure of the workplace and the recreation space in this dawn of the era of truly 'active retirement.'
The research and education programs at the Tulane Center for Aging are designed to meet the imperatives of an aging society. Our research focuses on cognitive aging, neurodegenerative disorders, and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. Among our initiatives is a broad attack on the age-related aspects of cancer and cardiovascular disease, as well as musculoskeletal aging including osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Underlying our efforts is the elucidation of the determinants of healthy aging. The translation of the basic research into clinical practice is the goal of our regenerative medicine program. We are establishing a presence in the area of policy planning in our health systems research. Our new interdisciplinary PhD program in aging studies spans the biomedical and psychosocial domains. This program is training a new generation of leaders for the public and private sectors. We are also working with our partners in the Section of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the School of Medicine and the School of Social Work on enhancing training in the areas of geriatrics and gerontology.
