Anesthesiology ~~ Chair's Message

It’s a pleasure to welcome you to Tulane Anesthesiology!  The Department of Anesthesiology at the Tulane School of Medicine has an important place in the rich history of anesthesia practice and that legacy continues.  As many changes in medical practice occur, and as anesthesia practice continues to develop, Tulane Anesthesia is poised to train residents and teach medical students for the future.

Anesthesiology is one of the most challenging, most demanding, and most rewarding of all medical specialties. This specialty is challenging because of its involvement with every type of patient, and every imaginable condition. The demands of this specialty are great as extensive knowledge and technical skills must be combined for maximum patient care in a variety of clinical environments.  Anesthesiology is rewarding because of the range of opportunities, the professional development of anesthesiologists, and the great satisfaction that comes with making a tremendous impact on the lives of our patients, our colleagues, our hospitals and schools.

No longer is Anesthesiology a specialty limited to the operating room.  While much of the work occurs in the OR, the practice of anesthesiology has expanded into intensive care units, ambulatory care centers, non-OR diagnostic areas, outpatient facilities, clinics, research labs and classrooms. Anesthesiologists are advancing medical care at the local, national, and international level. The specialty of Anesthesiology has been driving patient safety and quality improvement long before they became the popular topics. Tulane Anesthesiology is preparing physicians with the knowledge and skills for today, and the critical thinking and leadership skills that will carry their careers forward.

Residents and faculty enjoy living and working in one of the most unique cities in America.  Everyone enjoys the richness of living in New Orleans with its world class restaurants, shopping, art galleries and great neighborhoods. The city is famous for the French Quarter, the Garden District, the Warehouse District, trendy Magazine Street, and the Saints. You’re never at a loss for something to do in NOLA!

Tulane Medical Center

The heart of the Tulane Medical Center and the School of Medicine is located in “downtown” New Orleans, just a few blocks from the French Quarter. TMC is comprised of the Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, Tulane–Lakeside Hospital, Tulane Hospital for Children, Tulane Cancer Center, the Abdominal Transplant at Tulane Medical Center, and Tulane-Lakeside Women’s Center, the Multispecialty Center Metairie, Multispecialty Center uptown, Tulane Multispecialty Center Downtown, and the Tulane Institute for Sports Medicine. Our residents receive the majority of their training at Tulane University Hospital and Tulane Lakeside Hospital. In addition, residents train at the New Orleans VA Medical Center, New Orleans Children’s Hospital, and the Baton Rouge General Hospital.

Tulane Anesthesiology

Tulane Anesthesiology focuses on preparing the next generation of anesthesiologist for leadership and clinical excellence.  We recruit the best people and provide them with tools for professional development necessary for the 21st century. Our department is committed to the best care of our patients and to the success of our hospital partners. To do this, we draw on the resources of Tulane University and our international partnerships.

Simulation Based Education

Our Department uses the high tech Tulane Center for Advanced Medical Simulation and Team Training for our residents’ education. This is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art facility with simulated operating rooms, emergency rooms, labor and delivery rooms, and patient rooms. The center includes an ultrasound simulator for transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography training in perioperative cardiac function assessment.

The Combined Anesthesia Residency – A.B. Freeman School of Business MBA Scholarship

In a joint program with the A.B. Freeman School of Business our department offers the opportunity to earn a Tulane MBA. Located on the main campus, the A.B. Freeman School is one of the nation’s premier business schools. The opportunity to earn this degree during Anesthesia residency training prepares our anesthesiologists for administrative leadership in medicine.

China Exchange Program

Our department, in association with the Tongji Medical University and Union Hospital in Wuhan, China has a resident exchange program. Located in central China in the Hubei province, Union Hospital is a 7000 bed facility performing 200-300 surgical cases every day. Our residents have a hands-on clinical experience in international medicine like no other.

Innovative Fellowship Programs

Our goal is is to develop tomorrow’s medical leaders, and we started one of the first fellowships in Perioperative Management. This one-year position combines course work, research, and engaging in hospital functions with clinical OR responsibilities to develop expertise in OR management.  The department also offers other customized fellowship positions.

Commitment to Teaching

Our faculty is passionate about teaching and training residents and medical students. They teach actively in the OR and in our structured didactic curriculum.  Residents attend weekly conferences including Grand Rounds by Tulane faculty, and nationally and internationally renowned anesthesiologists. Monthly journal club discussions are held outside the hospital in a relaxed atmosphere.  Our anesthesiologists, residents, and CRNAs engage in weekly conferences, and we have an environment in which every member of the department supports the education of residents in training.

I extend an invitation to you to explore our department website and consider the opportunity to be part of the passion for anesthesia and patient care that is the Tulane Department of Anesthesiology.
