Ongoing Research

Data have shown that AFIB can be generated and maintained by a diseased/scared left atrium (atrial myopathy) – Advanced imaging allowed us to characterize a marker of atrium myopathy: Atrial Fibrosis. On this 3D we constructed image of the left atrium from MRI, the green area of the diseased fibrotic tissue while the blue represents healthy tissue. Studies have shown the more fibrosis (green are) you have the higher the risk you develop stroke & heart failure. The DECAF study conducted by director of EP Division, Nassir Marrouche is looking at whether targeting the green area (fibrotic areas) during ablation procedures leads to better long term success of the procedure. We are also conducting studies in TRIAD to figure out ways to decrease or reverse the disease of the left atrium.
