General Surgery Residency

Welcome to Tulane Surgery!

The Tulane General Surgery Residency Program is one of the oldest surgery training programs in the country, initially established in 1834 at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. We have a long and celebrated legacy of innovative and well-respected surgeons both on our faculty and matriculating from our program whose accomplishments are known throughout the world. Our rich history has created the foundation for our latest innovations and forward-thinking strategies, including cutting-edge technology and modern educational practices. We are fully accredited through the ACGME and match five categorical residents into our program each year through the National Resident Matching Program.

Our mission is to develop modern surgeons who provide innovative, high-quality care and demonstrate excellence in education, research, and leadership. Our faculty and residents aim to be the clinical powerhouse of the Gulf South, specializing in complex care and underserved populations. Together, with our graduates, we are leading a cascading impact to transform our profession.

Program Aims:

  • Provide the highest-quality, evidence-based and patient-centered care to patients from across the Gulf South, including those requiring complex care and underserved populations.
  •  Successfully recruit diverse trainees and faculty from all populations and geographic regions so our impact reaches into every community.
  • Develop residents, graduates and faculty who are leaders in education for our patients, students and community and who foster a commitment to life-long practice-based learning and education, embodied in the motto “Each One, Teach One.”
  • Provide opportunities for our residents to conduct meaningful and unique research which translates to clinical practice, helps shape clinical guidelines and improves quality and efficiency of surgical care.
  • Intentionally promote physician well-being, professionalism and humanism through our espirit de corps in which the whole person thrives through a culture of mutual trust, commitment, and support.
  • Develop graduates who aspire to greatness and hold leadership roles at all levels, spreading our above listed cultural principals and aims and leading to a cascading impact to transform our profession.
