Tulane-Lakeside Hospital for Women and Children houses the bulk of our pediatric residency program. Tulane-Lakeside is the long-standing home of our Level I, II, and III NICU, with 28 NICU beds, 10 of which are step down. We work closely with the obstetrics team to attend deliveries and care for the healthy newborns in the well baby nursery. Tulane-Lakeside is also home to our pediatric inpatient unit, and PICU. The inpatient unit cares for general pediatrics patients as well as subspecialty patients. There are 28 floor beds and eight PICU beds. Residents staff all of these areas and are the primary providers, responsible for all orders. The pediatrics ER is also at Tulane-Lakeside. It is staffed 24/7 by a pediatric ER provider and pediatric residents.
Ochsner Medical Center for Children is a non-profit, academic multi-specialty, healthcare delivery system dedicated to pediatric patient care, research, and education. Ochsner Pediatrics specializes in comprehensive care for the whole child - from preventive care such as immunizations to lifesaving efforts such as heart-lung transplant. Residents rotate on General and Subspecialty inpatient and outpatient services, as well as obtaining experience in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Well Baby Newborn Nursery.
Our program provides opportunities to practice in a variety of clinic settings for exposure to the diversity of demographic, social and economic populations within our community.
Lakeside Pediatric Clinic
The Tulane Lakeside Clinic building is located next to the Tulane Lakeside Hospital. It houses both primary care and subspecialty care pediatrics. Because it is located just off of I-10, it is easy to access for patients coming from throughout the state. Residents that have their continuity clinics here are able to follow patients that they have cared for in the NICU or newborn nursery next door. Tulane has additional specialty outreach clinics at other locations that are visited while on subspecialty rotations.
Ochsner Children's Clinic
The Ochsner Pediatric Pavilion is located across from Ochsner Hospital, easily accessed by Jefferson Highway. The clinic sees a large volume of primary care and subspecialty care patients. In addition to serving as a continuity clinic site, the Pediatric Pavilion provides the opportunity to follow subspecialty patients between the hospital and clinic while on electives at Ochsner.
Community and Satellite Clinics
Residents work in a variety of clinics to deliver medical care to children that otherwise do not get the care that they need. Our residents provide much needed medical attention to undocumented and uninsured patients in Community Health Care Centers. Venues also include the Covenant House Drop-in clinic, established in order to reach the most marginalized of our pediatric population, located on the edge of the French Quarter in the heart of downtown New Orleans.
We not only provide vital medical, case management and health education services to children who might otherwise be locked out of high-quality care, our leadership continues to play an important role in community outreach and advocacy. We are addressing one of the overlooked root causes of academic failure and social isolation as well as working toward the day Hispanic and other immigrant children have equal access to the fundamental human right that health care represents.
