The Masters Thesis Committee
The membership of the committee should be established as follows: The thesis committee will consist of a minimum of three faculty members; at least two of these members must be from the Department of Pharmacology. The name of the thesis advisor should be submitted to the Thesis Coordinator by November 1st of the academic year. The thesis committee will be chosen by the student in consultation with his/her thesis advisor. A tentative title of the thesis and names of the thesis committee members should be submitted by the student in writing to the Thesis Coordinator by December 1st. The student should get an approval of the subject matter and research direction from each member of the thesis committee by February 1st. The student must email his/her thesis to each member of the thesis committee to review and/or approve the thesis before submission of the final copy of the thesis.
It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that all deadlines are met and the final thesis follows the guidelines set up by the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program at Tulane Medical School.
The thesis will consist of a survey of the literature of the topic selected by the student in consultation with the thesis advisor. The survey of the literature (Introduction Section) should be approximately 20-25 pages; the survey should be supported by a reasonable number of primary references. The references should be numbered in the order that they appear. The student will propose a hypothesis to be tested based on the survey of the literature under the section of “Statement of the Problem” and design experiments to test the hypothesis. The thesis must include the following sections: Abstract, Background, Statement of the Problem, Materials and Methods, Expected Results, Discussion, Conclusions and Bibliography. The thesis should be typed double spaced. With regard to the style, basic rules, and forms for the Master's thesis, the student should follow the style according to the guidelines of the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program at Tulane Medical School. The thesis must be read and approved by each member of the Thesis Committee. Following approval, each member of the committee will sign the front page of the thesis. The letter of transmittance used for submission of the thesis to the Graduate School must also be signed by each member of the Thesis Committee and, in addition, must be signed by the Director of Graduate Studies (Dr. Clarkson), or Dr. Busija, Chairman of the Department. A copy (in the format of floppy disks or CD ROM) of the final thesis, committee approved version, should be submitted to Dr. Clarkson or Ms. Debbie Sanders before obtaining the signature for the letter of transmittance. The student must check with the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program for the deadline for submission of the thesis in order to graduate in a specific month (e.g. by mid-April for May graduation).
There are three months in which graduation occurs: August, December, and May. Graduation ceremonies are held only in May. However, in order to graduate in any of these months, an application to graduate must be submitted to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program. The student must check with the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program to submit his/her application.
When applying for graduation, the following fees are required: Graduation Fee $35.00.
