Dr. Joshua (Josh) Denson first came to New Orleans for his undergraduate studies receiving a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Neuroscience from Tulane University. He chose to stay at Tulane for his medical degree graduating with honors before traveling to New York City where he completed Internship, Residency, and Chief Residency at the NYU Internal Medicine Residency Program. Following this, he and his wife moved to Denver, CO where he completed a clinical and research fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado & National Jewish Health. He returned to New Orleans to join Tulane School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in 2018. Dr. Denson is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, and Critical Care Medicine. He primarily practices as an attending physician in the intensive care unit (ICU), pulmonary consult service and outpatient pulmonary clinic at the University Medical Center of New Orleans (formerly Charity Hospital).
Dr. Denson’s primary research interest surrounds healthcare delivery in the ICU. He has significant experience studying physician transitions of care in the hospital and their effects on patient outcomes. His prior studies were the first to demonstrate that hospitalized patients are at a significantly increased risk of dying following a provider care transition. Currently, he continues to explore this area with several projects investigating the relationship of service transitions of care, patient outcomes, and clinician burnout in the ICU. Further, Dr. Denson is actively involved in graduate medical education at Tulane University currently serving as the Associate Program Director for the Tulane Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program. He is an active member of both the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS) where he is currently serving on the national ATS Members in Training and Transition Committee (MITT).
