Learning Outcomes

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • Work under pressure in a trauma and emergency environment, making life-saving decisions
  • Demonstrate knowledge in the different surgical exposures for thoracic, abdominal and vascular injuries and their repair
  • Review the damage control philosophy
  • Make informed decisions involving endovascular stenting in thoracic trauma
  • Review various scenarios in cardiothoracic, abdominal, neck and extremity trauma
  • Discuss the effect of ballistics
  • Carry out a range of procedures, including:
    1. Left anterolateral thoracotomy and clamshell thoracotomy
    2. Repair of atrial and ventricular injuries
    3. Damage control vascular exposures and techniques including neck and extremity vessels
    4. Subclavian injury exposure and repairs
    5. Splenectomy, Pringle maneuver, liver mobilization/packing, Kocherization, pancreatic injury repairs
    6. Visceral medial rotations, renal repair and nephrectomy
    7. Small and large bowel repairs
    8. Temporary abdominal closure
