The primary aim of the Physician/Scientist Program (P/SP) at Tulane University is to provide an integrated learning environment to foster the development of physicians who are committed to the advancement of the medical sciences. Students will acquire the necessary skills to become both sound clinicians and accomplished scientists. More important, the P/SP is intended to promote a view of medicine and science as unified endeavors rather than distinct disciplines.
The P/SP is designed to take a total of 7 to 8 years. Students will begin their first laboratory rotation the summer before entering medical school. Students will also complete a rotation in the summer between their first and second years of medical school. If necessary, a third rotation can be done. Students complete their first two years of medical school as well as Step I of the USMLE before entering the Ph.D. training portion of their education. Ideally, the Ph.D. portion should take 3 - 31/2 years.
