The Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine Human Performance Lab contains an eight-camera Motion Analysis capture video system, a 16 channel Delsys EMG system and two 48”x 24” AMTI force plates. In preparation for a biomechanical evaluation, the athlete performs his/her normal warm-up routine before retro-reflective markers are placed on body landmarks from head to toe. After the retro-reflective markers are place on the body the EMG sensors are placed over the appropriate muscles. The athlete then performs his/her sport-specific motion while the 8 high-speed cameras capture data at up to 500 frames per second (15.5 times the rate of a standard digital video camera).
Data for each of the retro-reflective markers and the EMG are then processed to create a three-dimensional (3D) image of the athlete. A comprehensive evaluation of each motion is then carried out using custom software. A video CD containing the 3D images and a scientific breakdown of the mechanics and analysis of the stresses incurred at each of the athlete’s joints are provided. Recommendations for performance improvement and injury risk reduction are part of the final analysis for every athlete.
The results of a biomechanical evaluation provide valuable information for trainers, coaches and athletes. Walking, running, throwing, pitching, hitting, kicking and golf swing mechanics can be compared to normative data in order to pinpoint flaws in the motion.
Feedback from TISM’s team of doctors, therapists, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning specialists and sports scientists, along with input from the coach and athlete, provides a plan for performance improvement based on scientific evidence.
Motion analysis also provides vital data regarding joint stresses incurred during sport-specific movements. Knowledge of joint mechanics and the magnitudes and rates of joint loads provides sports medicine practitioners with the information necessary to prescribe injury prevention and rehabilitation programs. TISM’s team of sport science and sports medicine professionals will assist the athlete and coach in designing a comprehensive program targeted at injury prevention. All biomechanical evaluations will be completed with two goals in mind: improve performance and reduce the chance of injury.
