Tulane Heart and Vascular Institute enters new era

Tulane University School of Medicine is entering a new chapter in cardiovascular medicine with an expanded vision for the Tulane University Heart and Vascular Institute (TUHVI), positioning the university as a global leader in patient-centered cardiovascular care, research, innovation, and medical education.

Under the leadership of internationally recognized electrophysiologist and researcher Dr. Nassir F. Marrouche, Executive Director, TUHVI is advancing an integrated approach to cardiovascular medicine that combines individualized patient care with advanced imaging, artificial intelligence, translational research, and precision medicine.

At the core of the Tulane Heart and Vascular Institute’s mission is a commitment to develop more personalized treatment strategies that improve outcomes, enhance quality of life, and enable earlier identification of cardiovascular disease than ever before.

The expanded vision for the institute builds upon Tulane’s longstanding strengths in cardiovascular medicine while establishing a broader platform for clinical excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and translational research. Working alongside Dr. Jose Wiley, chief of cardiology and chair of the cardiovascular service line for LCMC Health, Dr. Jamil Borgi, chief of cardiothoracic surgery, and Dr. Victor Thannickal, chair of the John W. Deming Department of Medicine, Dr. Marrouche is helping shape a more integrated cardiovascular institute designed to advance patient care, innovation, and education across Tulane and its affiliated hospitals.

A major focus of the institute is advancing an integrated biomedical, experimental, and clinical approach to aging-related cardiovascular disease. This includes the use of advanced cardiac imaging, cellular and translational research, wearable technologies, biometric data, and AI-driven predictive modeling to better understand and treat conditions such as atrial arrhythmias, heart failure, and structural heart disease that are more prevalent and often worsen with advancing age.

The institute’s long-term vision includes developing a state-of-the-art cardiovascular innovation hub featuring advanced imaging suites, experimental research laboratories, wearable device development, drug discovery initiatives, and an AI-powered computing platform for predictive modeling, designed to accelerate breakthroughs in the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
