The Mission of the Tulane Transfusion Service is to provide blood components and blood management services to Tulane Health Systems (THS) patients in a timely and efficient manner. Transfusing over 15,000 blood components per year, the Transfusion Service acquires, stores and distributes all blood components used for clinical purposes.
THS Transfusion Services, located at the Downtown Campus and the Tulane-Lakeside Medical Center, support diverse and complex patient interventions, including acute medical and surgical incidents, prenatal care, labor and delivery, neonatology, trauma, burn, solid organ transplant, autologous/allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant, therapeutic apheresis and cardiovascular surgery. Led by a dedicated team of physicians and laboratory professionals, most with advanced specialty training and certification in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, our diversified staff provides daily consultation to THS physicians regarding optimal transfusion therapy and patient blood management. The Blood Bank is accredited by the College of American Pathologists, American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and registered with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The Transfusion Service also operates as the core educational resource for Transfusion Medicine in the Tulane Health System. The training of fellows, residents, medical students, nurses and hospital staff is an essential part of our commitment to excellence. Tulane Pathology Residents, under the supervision of the Transfusion Medicine Attending Staff, participate in the operations of the Transfusion Services, THS Therapeutic Apheresis Clinic and the THS Cancer Center Cell Stem Cell Processing Lab."
