Weight loss surgery:
Tulane Medical Center is proud to support a multidisciplinary team of healthcare specialists that are dedicated to the well being of the overweight population. This team consists of a surgeon with advanced training in weight loss surgery, a medical physician who helps treat diseases associated with obesity, a psychologist, dietitian, and a bariatric nurse coordinator who are all dedicated to this patient population.
Being overweight is not something to be ashamed of, but rather it is a chronic medical condition that warrants both medical and surgical help. Bariatric surgery (or weight loss surgery) in selected populations gives these patients a chance to beat this disease. With obesity affecting over 67% of the adult population in the United States, you are not alone and Tulane is here to help. The surgery is extremely safe and has a lower complication rate than a simple gallbladder removal. The surgery is done with small incisions to reduce the level of post-operative pain, and the hospital stay is short.
The process toward surgery:
Weight loss surgery is something we do not take lightly and not every patient will be a candidate. Our program offers state of the art care and will meet your needs every step of the way through this process toward a healthier life.
The first step in the process is to attend one of our FREE information sessions. During the meeting you will learn about the various surgical procedures we offer at Tulane, if you qualify for the surgery, and the process toward insurance approval.
Our information sessions will be the first Tuesday of every month from 6:30PM – 7:30PM at the Tulane Medical Center - 6th Floor Surgery Clinic Waiting Room. No appointment is necessary and we look forward to meeting you. If you cannot make the information session please feel free to review the patient information packet and slides online. If you feel like you have obtained adequate information regarding the surgical process, please feel free to schedule an appointment with us in the clinic.
Request an appointment by contacting Pamela Jackson, RN, Bariatric Coordinator, at 504-988-5110, ext. 3813.
We look forward to meeting you and congratulating you on your first step on the path toward a healthier life.
