Tulane Medical Center
Surgical Oncology (PGY 5 and 1): Residents work with faculty from the Endocrine, Colorectal, and Surgical Oncology sections. Residents on the Surgical Oncology rotation cover both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Acute Care Surgery(PGY 5, 2, and 1): Traditionally, a Chief Resident runs the Acute Care Surgery service. Faculty from the Trauma/Critical Care section rotate to the service on a weekly basis. The ACS service covers emergency general surgery and manages the Surgical Critical Care Unit.
Transplant (PGY 4 and 1): Working with the abdominal transplant team, the program involves kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation. Residents learn advanced operative techniques and transplant medicine, and participate in organ procurement.
Endoscopy (PGY 3 and 2): On Endoscopy, residents work with faculty from the colorectal and general surgery groups focusing on advanced endoscopy.
Bariatric/Minimally Invasive (PGY 3): Residents work with the bariatrics group at both of their downtown sites, the practice focuses on workup in management of the disease of obesity and advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
Cardiothoracic/Vascular (PGY 3 and 1): Residents work with both the cardiothoracic and vascular teams, care involves both open and endovascular approaches.
Night Float (PGY 2 and 1): Residents managing emergency surgery and covering inpatient call for all general surgical services overnight Sunday through Thursday.
University Medical Center
Green Service (University Medical Center) (PGY 5 and 1): Chief resident run the Green service at the University Medical Center where the focus is general outpatient surgery. Additionally, subspecialty cases can be scheduled with faculty from Endocrine, Colorectal, or Surgical Oncology.
Trauma (University Medical Center) (PGY 4, 2, and 1): One of the busy trauma teams at University Medical Center’s regional, level-1 trauma center.
Burn Surgery (PGY 2): Residents work with the multidisciplinary burn team at an ABA verified regional burn center
Veterans Affairs Hospital
General Surgery (PGY 2 and 1): Residents work with the general surgery group at the VA hospital.
Surgery Intensive Care Unit (SICU) (PGY 1): Residents work in the surgical critical care unit at the VA.
East Jefferson Hospital
Colorectal (PGY 5 and 3): Resident work with a busy private colorectal group on an advanced laparoscopic and robotic practice. In addition to the high operative volume, residents gain exposure to a busy, well-run private outpatient clinic with a high volume of in-office procedures.
Vascular Surgery (PGY 4): Residents work with a busy private vascular surgeon.
Children’s Hospital New Orleans
Pediatric Surgery (PGY 3 and 2): Residents work with the pediatric general surgery group.
Touro Infirmary
General Surgery (PGY 4 and 2): Residents rotate to Touro to work with a busy private general surgery group.
West Jefferson Hospital
Bariatric/Minimally Invasive (PGY 4): Residents work with a private group with a focus on advanced laparoscopic and robotic bariatric surgery.
Lakeview Hospital
Plastic/Breast Surgery (PGY 1): Residents work with the plastic and breast surgeons at large, busy community hospital.
Lakeside Hospital
Plastic/Breast Surgery (PGY 1): Residents work with the plastic and breast surgeons at a small community hospital.
Alexandria
General Surgery (PGY 5): The only rotation outside of the New Orleans metro area, the Alexandra rotation gives the Chief Residents a true community general surgery experience.
