Biography

Name: John Bloch

Hometown: Eugene, Oregon

Residency Program: Emory University School of Medicine

Medical School: Tulane University School of Medicine

Undergraduate: University of Oregon

Post-Fellowship Plan: I think I want the setting to be in academics with an emphasis on medical education, while remaining in New Orleans. Clinically I am considering transplant hepatology vs. general GI.

Things I like about New Orleans: There is no place quite like New Orleans. This city has a way of adopting people. I moved here for medical school and then left for residency where I learned what it means to miss New Orleans (I should have listened to Louis Armstrong’s advice). If you were blindfolded, put on a plane, and dropped off in New Orleans, you would know where you were within five seconds of taking off that blindfold. I don’t think there are many other cities so unique that you could say that about them.

Extracurricular Activities: I love to watch sports (mostly NBA basketball and college football) and play a little too (mostly basketball, ultimate, and disc golf). I love good food and spend time perfecting my recipe for homemade pizza and homebrew. Mostly though I just like to spend time with my wife, dog and three boys.

Why I love Tulane GI: The people of New Orleans deserve good medical care, and we are able to provide it to a very deserving and thankful population between our three sites at the VA, UMC (our safety net hospital) and Tulane (our private hospital). While I am new to the program, the camaraderie was apparent right off the bat and the entire program was very welcoming.
