This is a fully accredited program under the directorship of Dr. Alun Wang. It is structured to offer and accommodate both applicants of Pathology and Dermatology backgrounds.

For those with Pathology backgrounds, fifty percent of the training time will be spent rotating in various activities within the Department of Dermatology under the supervision of the dermatology faculty. The fellow is expected to participate in all the clinics.  The remaining fifty percent of his/her time will be devoted to training in interpretation of dermatopathology biopsy material from both UMCNO and Tulane hospitals, as well as various practices that contribute to the outreach program. The trainee will also be expected to spend elective periods of their time rotating through various specialized labs such as immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics to familiarize themselves with the fundamentals of these techniques. Those applicants with a Dermatology background are expected to split their time between surgical pathology and dermatopathology services. While on surgical pathology, they are expected to perform the duties of general pathology residents under the supervision of the anatomic pathologist on service. Special rotations based on supposed need, such as hematopathology, histochemical, electron microscopy and autopsy rotations are encouraged but not mandatory for their training. The remaining fifty percent of their time is expected to be similar to that described earlier for the trainee with Pathology background.

In addition, the trainee is expected to participate in section activities such as dermatopathology conferences for both dermatology and pathology residents, local meetings such as the Louisiana Dermatological Society as well as regional meetings. Commitment to intellectual activity including research, and publication is a requirement.
