6th Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat

A great time was had by all attendees of the Sixth Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat, held on Saturday, August 24th at the Dominion Learning Center of the Audubon Zoo, with lectures given by faculty and members of the department.

Department chair Dr. Hua Lu presented opening comments at 8:45am and Session One began with remarks from BMS graduate student Vivian Park.  Faculty members who spoke during the first session included Zhen Teng, William Wimley, Kelly Hebert and Hua Lu, Wu-Min Deng, Diana Staffa and Tony Hu.

Lunch was served at 11:50am and following free time to enjoy the zoo, the yearly Biochemistry Olympiad was held during 2:15pm.  Congratulations to the Jim Jackson Team for winning this Olympiad!

Session Two began at 3:30pm and speakers for this session included Jenisha Ghimire, Leo Williams, Wesley Frey, Qian Zhang, Delaney Hook, Dan Moss and Nimisha Bhattarai.

Drs. Zachary Pursell and Hee-Won Park co-organized the 2019 event.

5th Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat: More than just a day at the Zoo

Lovely weather was in store for attendees of the Fifth Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat, held on Saturday, August 25th, in the Dominion Center at Audubon Zoo on Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans. Lectures were given by faculty and other members of the department.

Department chair Dr. Hua Lu presented opening comments at 8:45am and Session One began with remarks from BMS graduate student Daniel Moss.  Speakers for the session, among others, included Dr. Heather Machado, postdoc Dr. Bo Cao and BMS Graduate students Eric Wu, Yujue Chen, Vivian Park and Ashkan Shahbandi.

Lunch was served at 11:50am, with free time to explore the zoo. This was followed by the ever popular Biochemistry Olympiad (see photos). The Landry Lab Group won this year’s event. Congratulations!

Session Two began at 3:30pm with opening remarks by BMS graduate student Shan Guha. Among the speakers were Daniel Moss and Drs. Hong Liu, Samuel Landry, James Jackson and Jeffrey Han.

At 5:30pm, closing remarks were given by the organizers of the 2018 event, Drs. Hee-Won Park and Zachary Pursell, followed by a reception for attendees at this well attended and successful Retreat.

Science Always a Hot Topic – Attendees of the 4th Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat faced the bright sun and a hot day during the annual event, which took place at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on Bourbon Street

A bright and sunny day was in store for attendees of the Fourth Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat, held on Saturday, August 26th at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on Bourbon Street, with lectures given by faculty and members of the department.

Department chair Dr. Hua Lu presented opening comments at 8:45am and Session One began with remarks from BMS graduate student Karl Hodel. Faculty members who spoke during the first session included Drs. Tim Niu, Yu-Teh Li, Arthur Lustig and Jeffrey Han. Other speakers included Lauren Swientoniewski, Shan Guha and Sonia Rao.

Lunch was served at 11:50am and the yearly Biochemistry Olympiad was held during the afternoon.

Session Two began at 3:30pm and speakers for this session included faculty members Drs. Hee-Won Park, Samuel Landry, Zachary Pursell and Hong Liu. Others presenting included Ji Hoon Jung, Qian Zhang, and Karl Hodel. Dr. James Jackson presented closing remarks.

Third Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat: A Knowledge-Filled Event

The Third Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat was held on Saturday, August 27th at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on Bourbon Street, with lectures by faculty and members of the department.

The daylong event began with registration at 8:00am.  Department chair Dr. Hua Lu presented opening comments and Session One began with remarks from BMS graduate student Charles Starr. Faculty members who spoke during the first session included Drs. Heather Machado, Yu-Teh Li and Jeffrey Han. Other speakers included representatives from the Blake, Lustig and Jackson labs (Grace Jairo, In-Joon Baek and Crystal Tonnessen-Murray, respectively).

Lunch was served at noon and at 2:00pm the yearly Biochemistry Olympiad was held (see photos).  Congratulations to the Lu Lab, who won the Olympiad

The Lu Lab was a repeat winner, having already won the inaugural Olympiad.

Session Two began at 3:30pm and finished at 5:30pm. Speakers for this session included faculty members Drs. Hee-Won Park, Samuel Landry, Zachary Pursell and Hong Liu. Peng Liao presented for Dr. Lu’s lab.

Closing remarks by Dr. James Jackson concluded the event. This was followed by a poster presentation and reception.

Second Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat brings Faculty and Students together

 

The Second Annual Departmental Retreat was held in the second-floor conference room at the English Turn Golf and Country Club, Saturday, August 22nd. In addition to stimulating lectures presented by faculty and students, as well as a poster session, the “Biochemistry Olympiad” was an enjoyable extracurricular activity in which labs competed in a variety of lab-based games of skill. This year, the Jackson lab took home the trophy designed and executed by Dr. Jeffrey Han. Below is a list of those who made this event possible.

1st Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat brings out the competitive edge in faculty, staff and students

Lectures by members of the department and the “Biochemistry Olympiad” were highlights at the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s First Annual Departmental Scientific Retreat, held October 3rd at the English Turn Golf and Country Club.



This first departmental retreat was held in the second-floor conference room at the English Turn Golf and Country Club, with lunch, dinner and the Olympiad held in the ballroom.

Faculty, students and postdocs of the department presented lectures throughout the day and keynote speaker Dr. Samuel Landry presented a talk on “Bio-extremity of Ultrarunning”.



Extracurricular activities included golf, volleyball and the first “Biochemistry Olympiad”, in which department members competed in a variety of lab-based games of skill. The Lu Lab team won the event, taking home a specially created trophy, designed and executed by Dr. Jeffrey Han.



Organizing the event were faculty members Drs. Heather Machado and Jeffrey Han and the department would like to thank the following graduate student volunteers: Emily Carron, Taylor Fuselier, Erin Henninger, Karl Hodel, Grace Jairo, Berkley Kauffman, Wenjun Liao, Blake Rust and Courtney Standlee. Wenjun Liao also designed the event logo, which was used on shirts.
