Students admitted and matriculated in the Physician Scientist Program can initiate their research training in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology by rotating in one of our faculty laboratories during the summer before entering medical school. MD/PhD students complete their first two years of medical school as well as Step I of the USMLE before engaging full-time in the PhD training portion of their education.
MD/PhD students trained in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Tulane, acquire a set of enviable skills that prepares them to become leaders as academic and clinical scientist with strong focus on biochemical and molecular mechanisms, enzymology, structural biology, metabolic homeostasis and molecular signaling basis for human diseases or pathological alternatives, such as aging, genomic instability, cancer, diabetes, metabolic disorders, immune disorders, and other types of genetic diseases as well as drug discovery.
