Changes Based on Student Feedback

Thank you for your ongoing participation in student surveys. Your feedback plays a crucial role in our efforts to improve the overall quality of the medical educational program.

See below for actions taken in response to your suggestions:

You asked for a streamlined system for accessing research opportunities

In March 2024, the Student Research Network was launched to improve access to research opportunities, offering a searchable database where students can find and apply for projects that match their interests.

You asked for increased funding to support conference travel

Supplemental funds available to support student conference travel were increased from $350 to $500.

*Note that all initial requests for travel funds should be made to the department participating in, sponsoring, or supervising the research project. Should departmental funds be insufficient, students may request supplemental funds through MSG.

You asked for paid access to UWorld to assist with preparation for Step 1

In the Fall of 2024, Tulane SOM provided T1 and T2 students with paid access to UWorld.

You asked for additional formative feedback, specifically in the form of practice questions

In addition to session-specific practice questions written by teaching faculty, preclinical teaching faculty have also begun incorporating UWorld questions into Phase I and Phase II teaching sessions.

In the clinical curriculum, T3 students now participate in mid-clerkship review sessions as part of clerkship didactics. During these sessions, students practice and review NBME-style questions to identify areas of strength and weakness and prioritize study plans within the respective clerkships. Additionally, clerkship students are now provided with 2 NBME self-assessment vouchers per core clerkship to gauge readiness for Shelf exams.

You asked for improvements to overall campus safety, including the availability of low-cost parking

Parking: In October of 2023, a parking provider for the 1540 Canal St. Lot (directly across the street from the Murphy Building entrance) began offering discounted monthly contract parking to medical students and Tulane employees, as well as discounted daily, early bird, long day, and maximum daily rates. To apply, email nolaparking@universalparking.com.

Lighting: Security and decorative lighting have been added to several campus buildings, including Hutchinson, JBJ, and Deming.

Patrols: Perimeter patrols of the Downtown district have increased by approximately 50% due to the restructuring of police assets from inside Tulane Hospital. These patrols are focused on the walking paths and parking lots most frequented by faculty, staff, and students.

Security Cameras: Nine (9) cameras have been installed at the following locations and are being monitored by the City of New Orleans Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC).

-Loyola & Tulane

-LaSalle & Tulane

-LaSalle & Perdido

-LaSalle & Canal

-Canal & South Robertson

You asked for additional secure storage space for personal belongings on the medical school campus

There are 3 sets of lockers in the Hutchinson building, two on the first floor (1109A & 1714) and another set on the Mezzanine level by the elevators. In the Murphy building, there is a locker area on the first floor in the bike room. All lockers are first-come, first-served. Bring your own lock.
