The Department of Microbiology and Immunology offers graduate programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D.degrees. Broad training is provided in many subdisciplines, including bacteriology (bacterial genetics, bacterial physiology, and bacterial pathogenesis), virology, immunology, and medical mycology. This training encompasses both course work in these areas and in biochemistry and research training in the form of rotations through faculty laboratories. Students also participate in the departmental seminar and may elect to take further course work in other departments of the Medical School and the University. This study occupies the first two years of training for the predoctoral student; the student then performs research in his or her chosen field under the mentorship of a faculty member with special interest in that subdiscipline.
