Research at Tulane

As one of the largest NIH recipients in the south, you will have the opportunity to pursue a research project of your choosing. There are diverse pathologies for case reports, longitudinal quality improvement opportunities, and original retrospective and prospective research projects to choose within different subspecialty departments. Funding for conference registration and travel, along with inpatient coverage, can be applied for if you are selected to present your research at regional and national conferences. Annually, the work of Tulane IM residents are well represented at National SHM, National SGIM, and other national internal medicine subspecialty conferences such as CHEST, ASCO, and ACC. If you are looking for a great academic career, or a great fellowship, this is the key: you have to be well trained, you have to have teaching skills, and you have to have shown that you can occupy a place in the scientific conversation (i.e., research). All of this, we guarantee, comes with the territory if you decide to come to Tulane.

Tulane is home to many of the nation's leaders in general internal medicine, medical education, women’s health, cultural competency and all nine of the subspecialties. This means that virtually any topic of interest can be researched at Tulane. In addition to the nine fully-accredited and fully-functional subspecialty sections, Tulane offers the added benefits of The Tulane Cancer Center, The Tulane Abdominal Transplant Institute, The Tulane Primate Center, The Hayward Genetics Center, The Center for Bio-environmental Research, and over 15 other centers for research excellence.

Scholarship Council

In 2017, our Scholarship Council was founded with the goal of facilitating resident scholarly activity at Tulane. The Scholarship Council is comprised of residents from each firm, and is overseen by various members of our faculty.

What we do:

  • Maintain an updated database of scholarly opportunities and mentors
  • Manage an updated database of local, regional, national/international conferences with deadlines that residents can apply for and be funded to attend (registration, travel, lodging)
  • Develop and update online resources that address every step of scholarly activity (how to get involved and how to develop a scholarly product)
  • Prepare and host scholarship-related didactics to teach residents how to research
  • Host Department of Medicine Resident and Fellow Research Day
  • Coordinate other events aimed at promoting resident research and networking with potential mentors
  • Facilitate productivity during research electives by connecting residents with relevant resources to help them achieve the next steps in their projects
  • Advocate for more resident resources for scholarship at the Department of Medicine and Internal Medicine Program levels
  • Disseminate all resources within firms and to program at large
  • Meet periodically with our faculty advisors to discuss new initiatives for improving scholarship
