The Tulane Advanced Imaging Center (TAIC) is a state-of-the-art MRI research facility located within the Tulane University School of Medicine. Established in August 2024, TAIC supports both pre-clinical and clinical research by providing advanced magnetic resonance imaging capabilities to Tulane investigators and external collaborators.
Our Capabilities
The TAIC occupies 1700-square-foot research suite located in the J Bennett Johnston Building on Tulane’s downtown campus. The centerpiece of the facility is a Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra 3T MRI System. The scanner is equipped for neuro, cardiac, body, spine, and musculoskeletal imaging in adult and pediatric patients, as well as animal imaging. Ongoing research includes studies of structure and function of both the heart and brain.
The TAIC is designed to support a wide range of human and animal research studies with state-of-the-art imaging capabilities and dedicated research support services. The facility features a Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra 3T MRI system with a 70 cm wide bore and advanced gradient performance for high-resolution imaging. Researchers have access to a variety of standard and advanced RF coils, as well as comprehensive imaging and analysis packages, including DTI, BOLD, arterial spin labeling, cardiac imaging, and more. TAIC also offers visual and auditory stimulus presentation systems, MR-compatible response devices, physiological monitoring with wireless ECG and SpO2 capabilities, and contrast injection systems. To support pre-scan preparation and pediatric research, an MRI simulator replicates the scanning experience. Additionally, the facility includes an MRI-compatible veterinary anesthesia system for animal studies. The TAIC team collaborates closely with investigators to design custom imaging workflows, ensure IRB/IACUC and regulatory compliance, provide scheduling and billing support, and deliver training and safety guidance—ensuring efficient, safe, and scientifically rigorous use of imaging services.
About Us
Chao Huang, PhD, Senior Director of MRI Operations, oversees the day-to-day activities of the center, working closely with the TAIC Medical Director and the School of Medicine’s Director of Research Operations. Together, they ensure that TAIC delivers high-impact imaging services while aligning with institutional research priorities.
