Tulane University's Section of Gastroenterology & Hepatology is proud to announce that Michael Schilsky, MD will be the 2023 Vizzi Memorial Lecturer.
"Dr. Schilsky is a world-renowned hepatologist," said Martin Moehlen, MD, Interim Chief of the Section of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Tulane University School of Medicine. "He is a well-respected thought leader for Wilson Disease, having coauthored the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) position paper for this disease. We are so very excited to hear him speak on this subject." Dr. Schilsky will be delivering the lecture virtually for the John W Deming Department of Medicine's Grand Rounds on Wednesday, May 3rd. All faculty, housestaff, and students are encouraged to attend!

"Dr. Kowdley is a dynamic speaker," said Martin Moehlen, MD, Interim Chief of Section of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Tulane University School of Medicine. "He is internationally renowned on the field of liver disease and is a thought leader for cholestatic liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis." Dr. Kowdley will be delivering the lecture for the John W Deming Department of Medicine's Grand Rounds Wednesday, May 3rd. All faculty, housestaff, and students are encouraged to attend!

Dr. Sarah Glover, Incoming Section Chief of Gastroenterology & Hepatology
I am pleased to announce that Sarah Glover, DO, AGAF, will serve as the next Chief of the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the John W. Deming Department of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Glover will join Tulane on May 1, 2023.
Dr. Glover is currently a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Sarah grew up in the Pacific Northwest, obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry at Seattle Pacific University and received her medical degree from Midwestern University in Chicago. Dr. Glover completed her Internal Medicine Residency and GI fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago before joining their faculty. She has also served as faculty at the University of Florida before being recruited to serve as the Division Chief for Digestive Diseases at her current institution in 2019.
Dr. Glover’s clinical expertise is in the medical management of complicated Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis, hereditary alpha tryptasemia, and short bowel syndrome. Over the past four years, she has focused her practice on improving care in individuals of African Ancestry with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Dr. Glover is an accomplished physician-scientist with a focus on innate immune mechanisms of gut inflammation and COVID-19 immune responses at mucosal surfaces. Her laboratory is currently funded with an NIH R01, a Chan Zuckerberg initiative grant, and funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). She also serves as Principle Investigator of multiple active IBD clinical trials.
Dr. Glover is a Councilor of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association. She is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Osteopathic Association, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies, and the American Federation for Medical Research. She serves as Chair of the NIH’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Digestive Sciences Emphasis Panel, as well as a reviewer for the American Gastroenterological Association Research Scholar Awards.
I would like to thank the members of the search committee, led by Dr. Mary Killackey, Chair of the Department of Surgery, for identifying the very best candidate for this position. I also thank Dr. Martin Moehlen for his dedicated service as Interim Section Chief during a period of transition.
The Section, Department, School, and University are delighted to welcome Dr. Glover to the Tulane family. Dr. Glover will be joined by her husband Ken Wilson, PhD and their four children Ella, Camille, Edward, and Fiona.

Aug/Sept; Hurricane Ida
 Upon the lifting of Code Grey one of our fellows was able to get some well deserved R&R with their pet. |

Hurricane Ida, a Category 4 Hurricane, swept west of the City of New Orleans in August 2021. Code Grey (severe weather threat to the area resulting in lockdown of the hospital to essential personnel) was activated prior to Ida's landfall. Tulane GI fellows Drs. Eric Montminy, Vance Hartke, and Victoria Jackson served to ensure that hospitalized patients with gastroenterologic conditions were appropriately taken care of during the storm. Despite the uncertainty of the storm's harm to their homes (being without power, and in some cases without water) these remarkable individuals were commended by the Section and Department for their service. As of September 13, 2021 operations have returned for the most part to normal for Tulane Gastroenterology and for much of the City. Utilities and services have been restored for much of the community; however, there remains a rebuilding for many of our City's residents and communities. |
