Applying to Tulane Internal Medicine

Thank you for your interest in the Tulane Internal Medicine Residency Program! Through your application, we hope to learn more about your medical education journey, including meaningful information about work, volunteer, and research experiences. These experiences along with the personal statement will help us better identify applicants who fit our program environment and mission.

We only accept applications thorough the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and do not accept applications or supplemental materials that are mailed, emailed, or faxed to our office.

Residency Program Tracks

Our Requirements

  • Applicants must complete the standard application in the ERAS and registration in the NRMP match.
  • Applicants must be graduates from an AAMC-accredited or AOA-accredited medical school.

International Medical Graduates

  • Per Tulane’s GME policies, we accept J-1 visas that are sponsored through ECFMG.
  • We prefer one year of U.S. clinical experience.
  • We recommend your medical school graduation year be within five years of applying.
  • We are unable to offer observerships and externships at this time.

Application Review

We take a holistic approach to reviewing applications. We do not extend interviews based on any one criterion alone. We consider all aspects of your application, including personal statement, extracurricular experiences, scholarship, and letters of recommendation.

Program Signaling

While we preferentially review applications from those who signal our program, we also consider applicants who do not signal us.

Interview Details

For the upcoming recruitment season, we will continue to follow the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine’s recommendations to conduct all recruitment events virtually via Zoom. While we recognize that virtual recruitment events are a different experience from in-person recruitment, we are committed to equity, transparency, and ensuring all applicants have a similar experience. Virtual interview times also facilitate participation from multiple time zones. Core faculty who participate in the interview process have completed training on implicit bias and strategies to mitigate implicit bias in interviews.

Interviews are by invitation only, and once accepted, you can choose your interview date. We have rolling acceptance for interviews and extend interviews throughout the interview season.

  • All interviews occur on Fridays. Before the interview, you will be provided with a link to the collective interview Zoom meeting.
  • To highlight the personal touch provided by the program, our program director or an assistant program directors will reach out prior to the interview for a brief five-minute phone conversation.
  • On interview day, program director Dr. Bhatnagar will speak with you about her experience in New Orleans and go through the basics of the program during the first hour. From there, there will be several breakout sessions including two 20-minute interviews, at least one of which will be with a current resident.

Again, thank you for your interest in the Tulane Internal Medicine Residency Program. We hope you apply to us this recruitment season.
