Welcome to the Tulane University School of Medicine Anesthesiology Residency Program. Residents who enter our categorical 4-year residency program will discover early on that they are part of a family. We are an intimate department that prides itself on providing a supportive atmosphere that is conducive to learning in a variety of clinical and didactic settings. With an emphasis on professionalism, collaboration, and teamwork, our residents develop into perioperative physician consultants who are well prepared for leadership roles in the academic or private practice setting.
Our residency program offers experience and training across the spectrum of anesthesiology specialties, including transplant, cardiothoracic, regional, pediatrics, obstetrics, critical care, and pain management. Our residents gain exposure to a diverse population of patients, often with significant co-morbidities, undergoing various types of procedures. Tulane University Medical Center, both Downtown and Lakeside campuses, serve as the heart of our training program; however, our residents also rotate at Children's Hospital of New Orleans, the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System (VA), and Tulane Lakeview Medical Center. Each training site has a unique mission, culture, work flow, and procedure variety which assists the resident with becoming a comprehensive perioperative consultant at the completion of training.
Our weekly resident didactic series is based on core topics of anesthesiology, which the residents work closely with our faculty to develop. Included in these sessions are journal clubs, problem-based learning sessions, practice management lectures, updates on current healthcare policy, point of care and TEE ultrasound workshops, and mock oral boards. In addition to the didactic sessions, weekly departmental conferences occur which consist of M&M and Grand Rounds presentations from our Tulane faculty and visiting professors alike. Additionally, simulation training sessions are integrated in the resident’s curriculum to assist with developing skill sets that are needed to become a diplomate of anesthesiology.
