Otolaryngology

Welcome to Tulane’s Otolaryngology Residency Program by those of us who call it home!  Our program is one of the oldest otolaryngology residency programs in the United States dating back to 1916, is fully-accredited and based in the heart of the uniquely historic city of New Orleans.  Despite the wide-reaching and devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans has come back stronger and more vibrant than ever and Tulane has been both a contributor and benefactor of that growth and vitality.

During our Residency’s five-year training period, we have the privilege of working with some of the best trained and most highly-skilled faculty in the country, including 18 faculty members with extensive fellowship training in their chosen field.  Collectively, our faculty addresses all subspecialties within the field of otolaryngology and offers welcomed guidance, ongoing mentorship and specialized expertise in whichever specialty you may choose to pursue.

As residents, we are fortunate enough to provide care for patients of diverse backgrounds from across the state of Louisiana as well as much of the Gulf Coast.  Our five distinctive training hospitals are all within the metro New Orleans area and provide clinical, surgical, and consulting experience in both private and public care settings. They include: Tulane University Hospital, Ochsner Medical Center, Touro Infirmary, Southeast Louisiana Veterans Hospital, and University Medical Center.

During our time off, New Orleans offers a wide array of year-round entertainment ranging from the festival-packed historic French Quarter and surrounding neighborhoods to great live music and some of the best dining in the world, whether it be a shrimp po’ boy or a gourmet meal.  An afternoon off may enable you to take in a round of golf (year-round) in Audubon Park or bike along the river levee.  Journey a bit further out of the city for outdoor opportunities such as fishing, kayaking, hiking, and camping to name a few.

Our program itself has a family feel and is great at supporting those who may have children of their own to consider when looking for a good fit in a residency program. Given the close, in-town location of our training hospitals, finding convenient centrally-located housing in New Orleans is easy and commute times are typically less than 15 minutes to any of the hospitals in which we work.

We are happy that you are considering our residency program for your next step, and appreciate your taking the time to review our website.  When the time comes to apply, we hope you will give strong consideration to Tulane’s Otolaryngology Residency Program as we believe you will find it a welcoming, challenging, and fulfilling environment in which to further your medical training.

Centered in New Orleans, we serve as a vital resource providing otolaryngology care for both public and private patients. Our downtown campus, as well as our historic affiliations with the Ochsner Clinic, University Medical Center New Orleans UMCNO, Touro Infirmary and the Veterans Administration Hospital, has provided the framework for outstanding patient care and an outstanding resident educational experience.

We have developed Healing Hands Across the Divide – a faith and community based partnership focused on eradicating cancer health disparity in the Greater New Orleans area.

Our challenges at a local and national level are great. The solutions are being discovered. It is our goal to have this department play an integral part in the national reshaping of our health care system. We look forward to working with those who dare to take this challenge.
