New Program Director for Anesthesia Residency Program

Katherine Cox, MDDr. Katherine Cox has been named the next Program Director for the Department of Anesthesiology Residency Training Program. Dr. Cox is the first woman to serve in this role as she takes over from Dr. Jonathan Weed who is transitioning to a different role as Chief of Anesthesia at the VA Medical Center. Dr. Cox will take over as the new Program Director on October 1, 2019.

Dr. Cox joined the department in 2016 and was the Assistant Program Director at the LSU Shreveport Medical Center before coming to Tulane. She received her undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge Magna cum Laude and did her residency in Anesthesiology at LSU Shreveport. Dr. Cox is a member of the department’s “Doctor of the Day” work group responsible for the daily management of the Tulane OR. She is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, and she is completing the Basic PTEeXAM Certification in transesophageal echocardiography from the National Board of Echocardiography.

In naming Dr. Cox to this important position, Dr. Haynes stated “I am excited to have Katherine as the new Program Director. She is an outstanding clinician and has demonstrated a strong commitment to the residency program since her first day with us.”

Most recently Dr. Cox chaired the Residency Clinical Competency Committee, which will now be chaired by Dr. Peter Foldes. Dr. Cox will oversee a residency program that has made several progressive changes in recent years, including the consolidating training in Tulane-HCA hospitals and revamping didactic training and expanded utilization of the Tulane Simulation Center.

Tulane Anesthesiology Moving to Medaxion for Perioperative Data Management

The Tulane Department of Anesthesiology will implement a new anesthesia information management system in November 2019. With support from our hospital partner, we selected the tablet-based system from Medaxion [https://medaxion.com] as the best platform among several possible vendors.

Medaxion is a great choice because it uses a cloud-based server model so all data is saved remotely. The Medaxion system uses Apple iPad hardware for easy point of care data collection in the OR, OB and non-OR areas. Its design follows the flow of anesthesia cases from pre-op evaluations in pre-admission testing and on the wards, to the OR, OB, and the PACU or ICU. It was designed for mobile platforms so Apple hardware will allow us to take it everywhere that we go. “The Medaxion system will be an advancement for the department as it will allow real-time data and analysis. Medaxion is the key to improving our work flow and our patient care. This change will have a big impact on our department,” said Dr. Haynes. The department is forming a new Informatics Committee to guide the implementation of the Medaxion system. Residents, CRNA’s and anesthesiologists will be joined by hospital IT specialists and Medaxion representatives on the committee.

Our all-in-one anesthesia information platform is mobile device-centric and supported by rich web, data management and analytics capability.
