Tulane Orthopaedics Diversity Statement

The Tulane University Department of Orthopaedics values diversity, equity, representation and inclusion. As part of our overall educational mission, we are invested in recruiting, supporting and retaining both faculty and residents from diverse backgrounds, particularly those who are members of groups who are underrepresented in medicine. We respect and welcome all physicians who share our goals to provide excellent patient care, train the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons and advance the field of musculoskeletal medicine for patients and providers alike.

We recognize that diverse voices and people with different backgrounds enhance patient care and overall healthcare outcomes. Diversity is a fluid concept that may include categories such as race, ethnic origin, gender, sexuality, religious affiliation, age, socioeconomic status, geographical background, and subspecialty training.

The field of orthopaedics has historically been known as one of the least diverse medical specialties across all Graduate Medical Education programs. Tradition, culture and unconscious bias have contributed to the lack of diversity, and we are consciously working toward change in those areas.  Efforts to improve the culture include educational initiatives for current staff and trainees, mentorship, leadership development, partnerships with pipeline programs, and transparent and targeted recruitment of diverse faculty and trainees.

We encourage and welcome diverse ideas and recognize that a collaborative environment of unique perspectives provides intrinsic value to our program. Moreover, we recognize the significance of providers who reflect characteristics of our own diverse patient population. Patients we serve in Greater New Orleans, southeastern Louisiana, and beyond often experience broad health disparities and challenges that can be uniquely addressed and enriched by providers who share similar backgrounds and characteristics.

Tulane Orthopaedics is committed to providing a professional educational environment that nurtures diversity, equity and inclusion to better serve our residents, faculty, patients and communities alike.
