A 4-year combined Anatomic Pathology Residency-Physician Scientist Training Program (PR-PSTP) is developed under the concept of Physician-Scientist Training Program with an emphasis on Pathology aspect. The intent of this program is to facilitate strong biomedical research opportunities balanced with a long history of excellence in anatomic pathology training at Tulane University. The program is flexible in accommodating individual needs and training goals. At the completion of training, the trainee will be prepared to pursue a career as both a scientist and a board-certified pathologist.
The Pathologist-Scientist Training Program is designed for individuals who are entering their Pathology residency program with either a MD degree or a combined MD/PhD degree with a record of significant research accomplishment. Successful applicants will exhibit a commitment to a career in academic medicine as a physician-scientist.
Applicants should apply to the Training Program through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). In addition to application through ERAS, applicants should submit their applications on paper to the Department of Pathology at Tulane University and include letters of recommendation from their research mentor, as well as copies of all research publications. Qualified applicants will be invited for an interview.
In addition to numerous lectures and seminars available at Tulane University, there are weekly seminars developed for research activities in the Department of Pathology, during which faculty members will discuss progress in their own work. Multiple meetings will be held to afford trainees the opportunity to share their research progress.
The trainees will receive appropriate guidance from the PR-PSTP training committee and from the Chair of the Department of Pathology who has overall responsibility for research within the Department of Pathology. A Research Mentor will be chosen by the trainee from among all faculty members at the Tulane University Health Sciences Center.
Besides a stipend for pathology residency, supplemental financial support is available and will include support for computer, travel and other research or professional development-related expenses.
Trainees are encouraged to apply for NIH Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (K08) during their 3rd and 4th year of training. The award is designed to prepare the trainee for a career that could have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the nation. Successful trainee will have opportunities to be recruited as a faculty member and to continue to pursue their projects at Tulane University.
