PrePair Mentorship Program

PrePairing Professionals to Achieve Inclusion, Respect and Resilience

PrePair is a Tulane School of Medicine mentorship program designed to support and uplift those who are underrepresented in medicine as they professionally develop. The inaugural program will run approximately twelve months and offer participants opportunities to meet regularly with their mentor/mentee(s), develop professional goals, attend program-exclusive events, and participate in an array of special sessions targeting topics related to professional development and equity, diversity, and inclusion. Led by Drs. Robert Hoover and Keisha Pierre and supported by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, this program will launch in October 2022 and proceed through to October 2023.

Welcome Message

PrePAIR, a mentorship initiative within the Tulane School of Medicine, aims to provide tailored support for individuals underrepresented in the medical field as they advance professionally. The program facilitates regular meetings between mentors and mentees, fostering the development of sustainable professional goals. Additionally, participants gain access to exclusive program events and specialized sessions addressing topics such as professional growth, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTORSHIP

Over the past decade, there has been minimal improvement in the representation of minorities. Additionally, individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, those with disabilities, and certain gender identities may also be considered underrepresented in medicine or URiM. Those considered URiM continue to face disparities in mentoring, compensation, unconscious biases, and access to resources.

To effectively cultivate resilience and longevity as a physician, ongoing mentoring throughout one's professional journey is critical. It serves as a vital element for success, long-term satisfaction, retention, and acquisition of new skills at every stage of one's career journey.

Our Mission

  1. Inclusion-Reduce obstacles to INCLUSION by nurturing and broadening institutional support and leadership within the URiM community.
  2. Respect- Cultivate an atmosphere of RESPECT by addressing marginalization and supporting the unique needs of URiM learners through effective partnerships and collaborative efforts.
  3. Resilience- Build RESILIENCE by enhancing and reinforcing social and educational support networks through established
mentoring connections for each URiM learner.
