The Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) at Tulane University School of Medicine is dedicated to enhancing the professional lives of our community of educators, researchers, and clinicians. We connect faculty with institutional resources, provide personalized guidance, and offer development opportunities to support excellence in teaching, research, and clinical care. Whether you're a new or seasoned faculty member—paid or volunteer—we are here to support your academic journey from onboarding through promotion and beyond. 

Our Services: Supporting Your Success

New Faculty: Offer Letters to Onboarding

We partner with the Office of the Provost, Dean’s Office, and academic departments to ensure a smooth onboarding experience. Our support includes:

  • Supporting departments in preparing Offer Letters for new faculty
  • Maintaining accurate faculty appointment records.
  • Hosting the Annual Faculty Orientation and Welcome Event, which introduces new faculty to Tulane’s mission, values, and academic community. This event features presentations from institutional leaders, overviews of key resources and services, networking opportunities, and workshops focused on academic success.
  • Coordinating with HR, the Provost’s Office, and other campus partners to support our faculty. 

 

Faculty Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure

OFA provides guidance and administrative support for academic appointments, promotions, and tenure. OFA assists faculty and their respective departments in preparing appointments, promotions, and tenure materials.

  • Managing the appointments, promotions, and tenure process in alignment with institutional policies, procedures and timelines.
  • Maintaining faculty records, issuing appointment notices, and assisting with credentialing.

 

Career Development and Promotion Guidance

OFA offers and distributes information about a range of career development programs and resources designed to support faculty at all stages of their careers. Through these initiatives, faculty can access the tools, knowledge, and support needed to thrive professionally. The SOM offers opportunities and career development through:

  • Annual Pathway to Promotion Workshops focused on providing clear guidance on criteria and processes for promotion as well as practical strategies for academic success.
  • CV Workshops offering guidance, templates, and best practices in developing an academic CV as well as and formatting techniques to facilitate promotion review.
  • AAMC early and mid-career workshops designed to help faculty build a strong foundation.  

Research and Leadership Development Support

Tulane University fosters a culture of innovation and leadership in academic medicine. OFA disseminates information about institutional programs, resources, and opportunities designed to enhance research capabilities, support leadership development and drive innovation in academic medicine

 

Faculty Feedback, Support and Recognition

OFA works closely with the School of Medicine departments and campus partners for the implementation of several faculty feedback processes and programs, including:

  • Annual Faculty Evaluations and Reappointments
  • Endowed Chair and Professorship Appointments
  • Appointments to Emeritus Status
  • Faculty Recognition Initiatives

 

Faculty Leave

OFA coordinates all international faculty leaves and vacation, sick, and domestic travel leave for departmental chairs. Sabbatical leave requests must be submitted through Interfolio.
