Genetics

The Hayward Genetics Center at Tulane University Health Sciences Center is an interdepartmental multidisciplinary program providing state-of-the-art service, education, and research in the full spectrum of diagnosis, counseling and management of genetic disorders. Established in 1978, the center is the only comprehensive genetics center in the Gulf South region offering clinical diagnosis and care for prenatal, pediatric and adult genetic conditions. The Hayward Genetics Labs offer the only full-service biochemical, cytogenetic and molecular labs in Louisiana. The center is the primary referral center for patients with abnormal metabolic newborn screening tests and patients are seen at Tulane and Lakeside as well as over 50 outreach clinics per year in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and Hammond. The educational mission of the Center includes clinical rotations and lectures for pediatrics residents, full degree programs for Masters and Ph.D in Human Genetics, complete courses for medical students at Tulane and outreach lectures in genetics at University of South Alabama. The Hayward Genetics Training Program is the only ACGME-accredited genetics training program in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas and offers training for American Board of Medical Genetics board certification in Clinical Genetics, Clinical Biochemical Genetics, Clinical Cytogenetics, and Clinical Molecular Genetics.

The Center has active research programs funded by the NIH, HRSA and other agencies to address basic science genetic issues (mechanisms of DNA methylation and diseases related to abnormal DNA methylation, origin of cancer producing chromosomal abnormalities) and clinical genetic questions (efficacy of enzyme replacement therapies in lysosomal storage disorders, telemedicine applications in genetic clinics, cofactor therapy in phenylketonuria).
