Program Details

TULANE DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY encourages applicants who are underrepresented in medicine and pursuing a career in general surgery to apply. Eligibility for participation in this program is not based on a student’s race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local laws.

Rotation Dates

Students selected for this rotation will choose their rotation dates of either July 6 - 31, 2026, or August 3 - 28, 2026. 

Program Perks

Housing will be provided, and students will be awarded a $1,000 stipend for travel & living expenses at the conclusion of their rotation.

Students can apply for consideration January 6–April 3, 2026, using the application link below. Those selected must then apply through VSLO to be formally accepted into the rotation. Applications in VSLO will open on or around the same dates, and selected students will be contacted soon after.

Application Process

Application Requirements

  • Applicants must be current 4th-year students in good standing at an accredited US allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
  • Applicants must have successfully passed step 1 and completed all 3rd-year core clerkships, including neurology rotation.

  • Applicants must complete the application no later than April 3, 2026  for consideration of the scholarship.
  • Applicants must send a $225 registration fee to the university through VSLO.
  • Applicants and/or their home institution must “provide proof of malpractice insurance, their immunization records, proof of COVID vaccination, proof of BLS or ACLS, and a demographic form.

Supporting Documents Required

Applicants will be expected to submit the following to the department when their VSLO application is complete:

  • Updated CV
  • Two surgery faculty letters of support
  • Personal statement about the applicant’s interest in Tulane Surgery (300 words or less)

Please Note: Upon receiving their acceptance of the scholarship, students will be required to submit an application in VSLO as the final approval through the university. Supporting documents, including an updated CV, Step Score report, transcript, headshot, and acknowledgment of the registration fee, must be uploaded to the VSLO application. This must be completed no later than July 1, 2024.
