PIPE Scholars

We are aware that the representation of minorities in the field of urology is surely lacking.  When it comes to African Americans and Latinos, despite constituting a significant portion of our population, the number of urologists is approximately 5% to 6% of the total urologists in the United States. We are trying to correct some of this imbalance by stimulating URiM (underrepresented in medicine) students to take an interest in medicine, join medical school, and then, hopefully, pursue urology as a career.
Tulane Urology has taken the lead by initiating the PIPE (Purposeful Infrastructure Promoting Equality) Scholars Program. For this, we receive applications from individuals who have completed two years of college and who show an interest in a medical career. After applicants are interviewed, two are chosen to participate in the summer. During the program, our scholars will learn basic science research and shadow faculty in the urology clinic at Tulane University Hospital. We are hoping that such PIPE programs will be established around the country, so as to bring about a sense of equity not only in medicine but specifically in the much-needed field of urology.
