Gastroenterology & Hepatology Program Director's Message

The Tulane University Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is a unique combination of educational innovation, patient diversity, research opportunities, career advancement, and the chance to be part of the ongoing reconstruction and revitalization of North America's most culturally unique city.

The faculty of the Section of Gastroenterology & Hepatology is devoted to the training of our fellows. As a fellow, you will be exposed to the full spectrum of general gastroenterology and hepatology. Our mentorship program pairs each fellow with a faculty member who can act as a guide in developing that fellow’s career. We try to fit the fellow with the faculty member who can best advise them on their chosen areas of interest.

Our fellows treat a diverse patient population in terms of demographics (race, religion, socio-economic status), diversity, and disease severity. Tulane is a tertiary center for hepatology/liver transplantation, advanced endoscopy, and motility disorders, attracting patients from throughout Louisiana, southern Mississippi, Alabama, the Florida panhandle, and  Latin America. Despite the trauma of Hurricane Katrina, patients throughout the region (and beyond) have continued to depend on our expertise. We pride ourselves on serving them in the best tradition of Tulane University School of Medicine. Clinical activities are conducted at East Jefferson General Hospital, University Medical Center-New Orleans, and the VA Healthcare System.

Additionally, it must be noted that New Orleans is the catalyst for our program’s enduring diversity, and it is still a great city with an instinct for thriving through adversity. New Orleans is still one of the world’s great cities, with a vibrant history and unique cultural heritage that reflects her people. Whether it be great performing arts, incredible music, elaborate festivals, tasty food (from backyard crawfish boils to world-class restaurants), year-round outdoor activities, professional sports, or just the freedom to find yourself, no city in North America matches New Orleans.

Our fellowship program is committed to equity as the driver of diversity and inclusion (EDI). Tulane broadly defines diversity as persons of color, members of the LGBTQIA community, members of diverse ethnic groups, including those typically underrepresented in medicine, members of economically disadvantaged groups, and others who bring a different perspective to the learning environment.

I thank you for taking the time to check out our fellowship program.
