Being a resident at Tulane means undergoing rigorous clinical training across inpatient, outpatient, critical care, and subspecialty settings, while living in one of the most vibrant and culturally rich cities in the country. Vacation and Leave
Residents receive the following vacation and leave, if applicable:
- Four weeks of paid vacation per academic year (two weeks during the Fall, two weeks during the Spring)
- Up to two weeks of paid sick per academic year
- Up to six weeks of paid parental leave
- The program dedicates two weeks to a winter recess coverage schedule to accommodate a short mid-year break and an opportunity to connect with family and friends.
Days Off
Residents have the following days off during their training:
- At least one day off in seven days during systole rotations (wards, ICU)
- Weekends off during diastole rotations (electives, research, etc.)
- Guaranteed golden weekends (weekend off) every five weeks
Medical Benefits
- Health insurance for residents is fully subsidized by Tulane. Dependent costs are the responsibility of residents.
- Dental and vision benefits are available to residents.
Scholarship and Educational Leave
- Residents may use up to five working days of Educational Leave per academic year to present at educational or scientific meetings that contribute to their medical education.
- Residents may receive clinical coverage and apply for monetary support for professional conferences when meeting certain criteria.
Wellness
- Residents have free gym access at each hospital site, Tulane's downtown TU Fitness Center, and Tulane's uptown Reily Student Recreation Center.
- Residents receive up to four wellness half-days per year that residents can take off for specific wellness needs like doctor's appointments.
Other Benefits
- Residents receive free parking at all three of our primary hospitals.
- Residents receive a food stipend at two of our primary hospital sites.
- On-campus childcare is available for residents.
