Ongoing Research Projects
  1. Therapeutic effect of novel and gender neutral estrogenic peptides targeted to beta-cells to improve pancreatic islet transplantation in models of type 1 diabetes (preclinical).

  2. Mechanism of estrogen receptor activation in suppressing hyperglucagonemia in diabetic models (preclinical).

  3. Use of novel tissue-selective estrogen complexes in preventing metabolic dysfunction in diabetic models (preclinical) .

  4. Role of the androgen receptor in enhancing insulin secretion in the male (preclinical).

  5. Mechanisms by which androgen excess predispose to obesity and type 2 diabetes in women (preclinical).

  6. Effect of Duavee (tissue-selective estrogen complexes with bazedoxifene) in preventing metabolic syndrome in post-menopausal women (DIM, clinical).

Targeting Estrogen Receptors to protect functional beta-cell mass

NIH 2R01DK074970-07 (Mauvais-Jarvis, PI) 09/01/02 – 08-31/15
The goal of this project is to demonstrate that estrogens preserve pancreatic beta-cell survival and favor insulin secretion and to determine the molecular bases of these actions.

Studies of Bazedoxifene paired with estrogens in the prevention of post-menopausal diabetes and obesity in rodent models.

Pfizer Investigator Initiated Research Grant (Mauvais-Jarvis, PI) 01/01/12 - 12/31/14
The goal for this project is to test the effect of Bazedoxifene (BZA) paired with estrogens in the prevention of post‐menopausal diabetes and obesity using rodent models.

Role of estrogens in suppressing hyperglucagonemia in diabetes

American Diabetes Association Basic Science Award #7-13-BS-101 (Mauvais-Jarvis, PI) 10/01/13-09/30/16
The goal of this application is to study the effect of estrogens in suppressing hyperglucagonemia in diabetic states and to determine the molecular bases of these actions.

Pilot study of DUAVEE in preventing metabolic dysfunction in post-menopausal women

Pfizer Investigator Initiated Research Grant (Mauvais-Jarvis, PI)  12/01/14 - 11/31/15
The goal of this pilot placebo-controlled study is to assess the beneficial effect of a 3 month-treatment with DUAVEE vs. placebo on glucose homeostasis and body composition in 20 post-menopausal women.

Tissue selective estrogen complex to prevent metabolic dysfunction in women

Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science (LACaTS) Center (Mauvais-Jarvis, PI) 11/01/14–10/30/15
The goal of this pilot crossover study is to test the effect of DUAVEE in a cohort of six post-menopausal women on basal metabolic rate, fat oxidation, body composition and systemic insulin action.
