The training of our psychology interns is carried out within the wide range of clinical facilities served by the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Tulane University. The internship training encompasses broad and diverse experiences in the evaluation and treatment of patients with a wide range of medical and psychiatric illnesses. At the hub of New Orleans’ largest multi-institutional medical complex, located in the New Orleans Central Business District, doctors’ offices and clinic facilities are across Tulane Avenue from the Medical School.
The faculty and administrative offices for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences are housed in two office buildings: the Tidewater Building and the Murphy Building. Both are multi-story medical office buildings. The Adult Psychiatry Section is located in the Tidewater Building and the Section of Child Psychiatry is located in the Murphy Building, two blocks from the Tidewater Building.
The Tulane Comprehensive Assessment and Treatment Team is located on Poydras Street, near the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Metropolitan Human Services District Children and Youth Services Clinic is located on Elysian Fields Avenue.
The psychology intern will participate in a variety of supervision experiences during the internship year. These are described below:
Each intern chooses a primary mentor at the beginning of the year; this mentor serves as an advisor to the intern throughout the year and offers continued assistance to the intern in achieving their training goals and needs. The mentor is well acquainted with all training opportunities and sites, and helps the intern make decisions about electives, conferences, and other activities that will enhance the intern's training experience. The mentor can also advise the intern should any special needs or problems arise, as well as aid in the transition from internship to postdoctoral positions or employment.
The intern is also assigned a primary clinical supervisor at the beginning of the training year at each clinical training site. Supervisors will provide supervision at the clinical training site and offer special assistance to the intern during orientation to the program. At each clinical training site, the intern receives a minimum of two hours per week of one-to-one supervision from the supervisor, and two hours of other supervision. Supervision is also provided upon intern request, or if needed, in addition to the scheduled sessions.
Certain training settings also employ group consultation and supervision. All primary supervisors are licensed full-time psychology faculty or adjunct faculty members working at the clinical training sites. The intern will have the opportunity to work with other disciplines (e.g., psychiatrists, social workers). In addition, at the Forensic Psychology training sites, the intern may receive supervision on some cases from staff (non-faculty) psychologists. While all sites have Tulane psychologist faculty members, working in a multidisciplinary context offers additional diverse supervision and training experiences.
