The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is located at Children's Hospital New Orleans. The Section of Pediatric Critical Care is a truly tertiary, multidisciplinary unit that provides care for infants, children and adolescents who become critically ill or injured.
Under the leadership of Dr. Ed Frieberg, program strengths include management of solid organ transplants concurrently with the transplant surgeons, Pediatric Nephrology, Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery, Hematology/Oncology, and Pediatric Gastroenterology; capability to provide ECMO for both respiratory and cardiac failure and a full complement of renal replacement therapies with the assistance of the Nephrology service.Read More
The section has initiated a formal Sedation Service, organized and implemented by the Director of PICU , Dr. Olugbenga Akingbola. Sedation services are to be available to pediatric practitioners to assist with procedures and imaging studies on both an in-patient and an out-patient basis.
The physicians, nurses and allied medical care professionals who work in the PICU have the knowledge, skill and judgment to quickly assess and treat your child to achieve the best outcomes possible from critical illness or injury.
In addition to services for Children's Hospital New Orleans, the Critical Care Section is contracted with University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO) to provide consulting services for pediatric trauma patients there 24 hours per day, 7- days per week. In addition, we are integral members of the Trauma Committee at University Hospital and participate regularly in physician peer review there.

Tulane Simulation Center- Pediatric Critical Care Program
Under the direction of PICU faculty, the Tulane Center for Advanced Simulation serves to complement all the teaching programs conducted by the Section of Pediatric Critical Care. The Section conducts simulation based courses in fundamentals of Pediatric Critical Care for community physicians, residents, medical students and PICU nurses. Simulation based modules on pediatric airway, cardiac rhythm disturbances, pediatric shock, intracranial emergencies in pediatrics, sedation related adverse events & rescue techniques under the direction of Dr. Akingbola. The section also conducts an interdisciplinary seminar (IDS) series on ‘Clinical Competency & Team Leadership Skills” in Pediatric Critical Care for 3rd year medical students and a PICU module for 4th year medical students committed to a career in pediatrics under the auspices of Advanced Pediatric Electives. These Simulator based modules are designed to teach cognitive, psychomotor and team leadership skills to our medical students, residents and PICU nursing staffs, Dr. Singh regularly conducts seminars and workshops on CRRT and mechanical ventilation for residents and nurses. These seminars are hands on using advanced simulation technology
The members of the group regularly review potential topics for case reviews, small controlled clinical trials or collaborative studies. Regular publishing in the peer reviewed literature is a priority for the section.
