Introduction
The Department of Anesthesiology Research section is excited about our continued growth, direction, and scope. We have initiated collaborative relationships with many departments and schools within Tulane University including the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Physics and Engineering Physics, The School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and The A.B. Freeman School of Business.
These relationships have resulted in several studies and continue to contribute to translational research at the faculty, resident, and medical student levels with collaborative efforts from the faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students of the corresponding departments and schools. In addition to our investigator-initiated research, we have expanding corporate sponsored research, which helps to fund many of our research activities. Our department is the anchor for one of the largest anesthesia clinical registries in the country. We have ongoing comprehensive analyses and research studies based on this extensive database.
Our residents have multiple research projects in which they are either principal investigators or co-investigators for IRB-approved studies. Many of our CA-3 residents conduct original research for their required senior projects. Our senior projects encompass original research, reviews of the literature, or case report discussions. Each resident is assigned to a faculty research advisor who provides direction and development assistance for completing their projects. All projects are expected to be of significant quality to be published in a peer reviewed journal.
We actively encourage and participate in multiple national and regional-level conferences such as the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA), the ASA Conference on Practice Management, International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS), and the Gulf Atlantic Anesthesia Residents Research Conference (GAARRC). Our residents have presented at many of these meetings every year and have won awards for their presentations.
