(Currently, PharmD/PhD program, University of Maryland)

My time spent as a Master's student in Molecular Medicine, at Tulane Medical school played a pivotal role in my career. High expectations are placed on students, but the faculty provide the necessary support for student success. I was especially impressed with how the professors presented the material in ways to spark scientific inquiry. If you're looking for a program that can provide opportunities for strengthening your application for professional school, gaining research experience, and expanding your scientific knowledge. Tulane Master of Molecular Science is the program for you!

Wendy Mauti, Class of 2021

(Currently, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Class of 2025)

Applying to this program was the best decision I ever made for myself! I made lifelong relationships with my mentors, peers, and elevated my strength as a student.

The strengths of the program are its organization, support from department, and challenging curriculum. The program is organized in such a way that the information builds in a sequential manner. The information learned at the beginning of the program served as a strong foundation for the material that would later be taught. This helped cement vital concepts. Furthermore, there is overwhelming support from the department. Whenever I needed questions answered, the responses were prompt. When I needed to come up with a plan that would prepare me to gain acceptance to dental school, I had full support and guidance. As a result of this, I was acceptance to the number 1 school on my list! Additionally, the challenging curriculum sharpened my time management and studying skills. The difficulty of the courses and the exams molded me into a student who could handle anything. Therefore, I can confidently say that the skills I learned will make me a successful dental student!

The lectures that give insight to the lectures provided in Dental school and also the research experience. I appeciated the lecturers such as Dr. Savkovic, that did check-ins and was an amazing confidence booster during rough times.

Niani Bailey, Class of 2021

The program is small which allows the students to build relationships with each other. The curriculum is rigorous, allowing room for growth and preparing us for the work load we’ll experience in medical/dental professional schools.

Jacob Kahn, Class of 2021

TStrengths of the program including learning from professors who teach within the SOM, material and test questions are modeled after SOM curricula, Professors are passionate about students' success, research opportunities.

Opportunities to engage in centers from across the university (i.e. National Primate Center) while still integrating with the program’s mission statement, the opportunity to take independent study courses outside of the department and, overall, flexibility in both content and scope of pedagogy.

The decision to apply for graduate school was not an easy one. And if I were to go, I wanted to be a part of an institution that had my best interests in mind and would view me holistically. Research led me to Tulane University where testimonials from present and past students spoke of the values that the school embodied. These testimonials spoke of an institution that made the time to know the students as individuals and equipped them with knowledge and skills necessary for the future. Despite feeling that it was too good to be true, I applied and almost immediately became subjected to the caring nature of the school. I was guided through the application process and even with housing by the Program Director, Dr Haitao Zhang.

The program boasts professors, administrative staff, and students who collaborate and seek to make one’s journey as enriched as possible. The classes were created such that one subject would help in the learning and understanding of another. The teachers used real examples to bring these classes to life so much so, most Pathology classes would end in a discussion of how to identify and treat a specific illness in detail. What I truly enjoyed and appreciated was the cohesive nature of the department. Here, translational medicine is not merely concept but simply the way things are. There were professors and other staff with whom there may not be much interaction, and yet they still helped wherever possible. There is nothing like a professor stopping you to catch up on events in your personal and academic life and still remembering the details. The education received—both formal and nonformal, has played a pivotal role in my matriculation to medical school. I am certain that as I advance in my medical career, I am equipped to play my part in “transforming health through discovery and life-long learning”.

Illona Brumfield, Class of 2020

(Currently: LSU School of Medicine, MD/PHD Class of 2027)

The Molecular Medicine program at Tulane had everything I was looking for: small, personal classes and an intensive curriculum focused on molecular biology. I was looking for a one-year program that would enhance my application to medical school, and one that would further my understanding of the intricate molecular pathway disruptions that lead to disease. This program exceeded my expectations. I was exposed to a rigorous curriculum taught by both clinical and research faculty that included advanced coursework in cellular biology and pathobiology. Students are included and encouraged to participate in discussions at research seminars and grand rounds. I was also connected with resources throughout the Tulane network, including multiple physician shadowing and research opportunities. Throughout, the faculty were always available to provide guidance and support. The education and experience I gained in the Molecular Medicine program left me feeling prepared for doctoral programs in either clinical medicine or the basic sciences. I am thankful I chose the Molecular Medicine program at Tulane because I believe it played in important role in securing my admission to medical school, and I know I am better prepared to succeed in medical school and beyond.

Rida Sajid, Class of 2020

(Currently, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Class of 2024)

I am very grateful for my experience in the MS program. The curriculum was designed to challenge me to think critically, hence disciplining me as an overall student. Each of the professors were highly knowledgeable in their fields of study so there was always something to learn from them, whether it be in class lectures or research seminars. I was particularly excited to get hands-on experience in the lab. I also appreciated the faculty and staff for being so supportive in trying to help reach our academic goals. After completing the program, I was able to prove to admissions committees that I can manage a heavy course load schedule.
