Global Opportunities

Tulane Surgery Residency offers diverse global opportunities, exemplified by programs like the NIH-sponsored Fogarty grant. This program allows residents to engage in impactful research and clinical work abroad. For instance, one of our residents, Dr. Xinyi “Cathy” Luo, is currently conducting research at Malawi's Kamuzu Central Hospital, focusing on improving neonatal surgical outcomes. These global opportunities provide our residents with invaluable experiences in addressing critical healthcare challenges in resource-limited settings, enhancing their skills and broadening their perspectives on global health.

Tulane Surgery Residency also supports mission work, with residents participating in medical missions to the Dominican Republic in 2004 and 2005 through New Orleans Medical Mission Services, Inc. (NOMMS). This organization, founded by Greater New Orleans physicians, provides critical medical and surgical care to underserved communities in Central and South America. These missions offer residents a unique opportunity to contribute to global health initiatives while gaining valuable experience in delivering care in resource-limited settings.
