School of Medicine alumni talk about the past, present and future of Charity Hospital
Charity Hospital served as a teaching hospital for nearly 175 years, and countless Tulane University School of Medicine fellows, residents and medical students rotated through and trained at the venerable institution. The hospital sustained severe flood damage during Hurricane Katrina and the doors have been shuttered since 2005.
In late 2021, Tulane University and the development companies of 1532 Tulane Partners, Inc. and SKK Opportunity Zone Fund I, LLC, formally announced a new phase in the redevelopment of the former Charity Hospital building. Tulane signed an “anchor tenant” lease, pledging to occupy over a third of the building’s million square feet with an academic and research presence. This commitment allows the Charity project to begin, and over the next few years, the New Orleans community will be able to watch as Charity rebirths into a mixed-use complex anchored by not only the Tulane School of Medicine and School of Public Health and Topical Medicine settling in, but also likely containing housing, retail stores, educational institutions and other types of spaces.
The Tulane Medical Alumni Association hosted a webinar with alumni who once trained and worked at Charity Hospital. The event featured Madelaine Feldman, MD (N ’77, M ‘82, F ‘88); E. Wesley (Wes) Ely, Jr., MD (A&S '85, M ‘89, PHTM ‘89); Robert S. Gold, MD, FAAP (A&S '78, M ‘82); Amalia (Amy) M. Landa-Galindez, MD (M ‘90); Gwenesta (Gwen) Barnum Melton, MD (M ‘79); Gary M. Wiltz, MD (A&S '75, M ‘79, I ‘80, R ‘82); and Patrick Norton, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Tulane University.
