The Obstetrics and Gynecology clerkship provides diverse experiences in women's health in a variety of primary and tertiary health care systems. Our primary goal is to cultivate student interest in the unique aspects of women's healthcare. The student may also receive exposure to the subspecialty areas of Obstetrics & Gynecology, including Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Urogynecology, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. The department also offers electives, and sub-internships in general obstetrics & gynecology and certain of the subspecialty areas to further expose the student to the specialty. The course curriculum has been adapted from a national curriculum developed by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO). The eight-week course is divided into two four-week segments: Obstetrics and Gynecology. In addition to a well rounded general experience, students may be exposed to obstetrical and gynecological sub specialties including Maternal Fetal Medicine, advanced Laparoscopic surgery, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Gynecologic Oncology, and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstruction . The clinical experience is supplemented by a series of lectures and small preceptor groups. Students are evaluated on their clinical performance by faculty and residents (40%), acumen of gynecologic history acquisition and examination via the Clinical Skills Assessment (10%), and an examination of their fund of knowledge by taking the National Board of Medical Examiners Obstetrics and Gynecology Exam (30%). Students will be responsible for both inpatient & outpatient experiences in Obstetrics & Gynecology- including Gynecologic surgeries, pre-operative & post-operative care, obstetrical patients-postpartum, laboring, and antepartum, and ambulatory patients. Clinical training is offered with Tulane Faculty at Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, Tulane-Lakeside Hospital, University Hospital and Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, Louisiana and Adjunct Faculty at West Jefferson Medical Center.
