History

Explore the full chronological history to see how Tulane Pediatrics helped shape the future of child health.

From a time when children were treated as small adults and pediatric care was nearly nonexistent, Tulane’s School of Medicine played a pioneering role in shaping modern pediatrics in New Orleans and beyond. Beginning in the mid-1800s with its partnership with Charity Hospital, Tulane helped establish dedicated care for children, championed public health advances like safe milk and disease prevention, and built one of the region’s most influential pediatric departments. Across generations of visionary leaders, educators, and advocates, the department evolved through war, epidemics, scientific breakthroughs, and healthcare reform—leaving a lasting impact on child health, medical education, and community care.
