ExamN Troubleshooting

Requirements

*** PLEASE NOTE ****

webcam and microphone are now required for testing given the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

PC:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 (professional or higher preferred)
  • EXAMN cannot be used on virtual operating systems such as Microsoft’s Virtual Machine, Parallels, VMware, VMware Fusion or any other virtual environments.
  • Windows RT and S are NOT supported
  • Only genuine, U.S.-English, French, Portuguese, Swedish, and British versions of Windows Operating Systems are supported
  • CPU Processor: 2.0 ghz Intel i3 processor or equivalent or higher
  • RAM: 8 GB or more
  • Hard drive: 1GB free disk space for ExamSoft Examplify(exam software)
  • Microsoft .Net 4.5 Framework installed
  • Screen resolution: 1024 x 768 resolution or higher
  • Built-in WiFi (must be 802.1b/g/n compliant)
  • Wired Ethernet connection is required for NBME exams either with Ethernet adapter or built-in Ethernet
  • A working USB port is required (Newer devices may require an adapter)
  • Internet Explorer 9 or higher

Surface Pro:

  • Surface Pro, Surface Book, and Surface Laptops are supported (Must be Pro-version)
  • External Keyboard (USB or Bluetooth) required. Bluetooth keyboards must be paired prior to launching exam
  • Hard Drive: 1GB or higher available space
  • Screen Resolution/Display Settings must be set to 1920×1080
  • A working USB port is required
  • Wired Ethernet connection is required for NBME exams using a USB to Ethernet adapter

Mac:

  • Operating System:
    • Mac OS XII 12.x Monterey
    • Mac OS XIII  13.x Ventura
  • Server version of Mac OS X is NOT supported
  • CPU Processor: Intel or M1
  • RAM: 8 GB or more
  • Hard drive: 1GB free disk space for ExamN (exam software)
  • 1024 x 768 resolution or higher
  • Built-in WiFi (must be 802.1b/g/n compliant)
  • Wired Ethernet connection is required for in-person NBME exams either with USB to Ethernet or built-in Ethernet.
    • Currently, NBME exams are done via remote proctoring.  If full in-person exams resume, wired ethernet via usb adapter will be required.
  • A working USB port is required
  • Chrome 61 or higher
  • Firefox 54 or higher
  • Beta versions of operating systems or browsers are not supported.

Installation
  • Go to https://he.emedley.com/downloads
  • Click on the download that suits your operating system (Mac or PC)
  • Once downloaded, launch and follow the instructions to install ExamN
    • Mac Users, you may get an error stating that Apple cannot verify verify the developer.
      • Open the installer by going to Finder->Downloads
      • Locate the download
      • Use the Option+shift+click->Open to open the installer
      • Ensure that screenshots are set to save to the desktop
  • Open the program.
    • Mac users, find this in your launchpad (or under Applications).  PC users can find this in the start menu or the desktop shortcut.
    • You will then be asked to 'Register' ExamN.  The Registration Code is 'EXAMNPLUS'
  • Mac Users, If you encounter an issue whereas it asks for 'Finder Access Required' and it appears you've given access already, this may be an issue of the default location for screenshots being other than the Desktop.  Please set this to the desktop.
    • from the main screen, click on Finder->Utilities->Screenshot.app
    • Select Other-Options->Desktop
    • Click on Capture.  Then close the program. Try re-loading ExamN
  • Once this is opened, you should be able to login to the EMedley portal as normal using your Tulane email address
Taking the Practice Test
  • Launch ExamN (Mac users, you should find this through the Launchpad or through Applications)
  • Log In using your Tulane email address Password
  • Click on NOLA Secure Quiz
  • Then click on the 'Download Exam' button
  • Click on 'Start Exam'
  • Follow the Exam procedures as given.
  • An exam notice will be shown, click on 'Next'

Once you open the exam understand where the controls are:

  • At the top there is a dropdown for Exam Controls (Hide Exam and Submit Exam)
  • There is the Clock.  This is both indicating how long you have left but also allows you to set alarms to pace yourself.
  • There is a Highlighter function allowing you to markup parts of the stem with different colors.
  • Font/Magnification icon.  Pressing on this will allow you to modify/magnify the fonts.
  • On the right-hand side of the screen, if allowed, there is a pull-out drawer which shows the item numbers with an indicator as to whether its been answered or not.  You can click to any question directly by clicking on these numbers.
  • There is also a Next-Previous Button on the bottom of each question. The Previous button may be disabled based on the exam.

Run through the practice exam, familiarizing yourself with the controls.  Then click on ‘Exam Controls’->Submit Exam
Close out your exam and upload.

Downloading Your Exam
  1. Open ExamN
  2. Login using your Tulane Email address and password
  3. Available Exams will appear.
  4. Select the Exam your are supposed to be taking and click on the Download Button. You should see a download confirmation.
  5. Enter the Opening Password and start the exam.
